tYp Yogi of the Month - August 2013 - Thomas Tran

Q: Where are you from?

A: Born and raised in LA

Q: Why did you start practicing yoga? How often do you practice each week?

A: I wasn't happy with where I was about a year ago and felt like I needed to make some changes in my life. My sister, who's also a yoga teacher recommended that I give yoga a try. So I took a chance and took my first class with Jasmine at tYp. I really miss her by the way, especially the little pearls of wisdom she gives in her classes.

After that first class, I just felt a little lighter and more centered. It's hard to describe that feeling but I knew I wanted more if it. So I took a few more classes and quickly fell in love with it. I now practice 4-5 times a week.

Q: Have you noticed any changes in your life since you started regularly practicing yoga?

A: I noticed I appreciate the little and simple  things in life more. I'm also more in tuned with my body and try not to take it for granted. We're only given one body so you should take care of it and honor it.

But what I've discovered is that yoga doesn't change who you are. It just allows you to peel off the many layers you've built up over the years so you can discover your true self. Both the good and the bad.

Q: What do you like most about attending classes at tYp?

A: tYp is like my own little escape, a sanctuary of sort. It's nice to know I have a place I can go to be more centered and allow myself to focus inward. All the teachers have been awesome, each with their own unique style, and are always helpful if you have any questions. You can also feel the great energy from the yogis practicing here too. It's really a great little community.

Q: What are your goals for your yoga practice?

A: I don't have any specific goals. I just want to enjoy the practice and see where it takes me. But who knows, I might be a yoga teacher in the future.

Q: What is your favorite yoga pose and why?

A: It's hard to pick just one, but I would have to say crow. It took me awhile to get it and even face planted a couple times too, but that's part of the fun. You just have to laugh about it. When I finally I got the pose, I was like WOW, I actually did it. It was an amazing feeling.

Q: What is something you'd like to reveal that people don't know about you?

A: I love animals especially dogs, so I would like to start my own animal shelter someday.
